Peter Enns & His Rock

9/11/2014

A few days ago I read an article about former Westminster Theological Seminary professor Peter Enns, who said he first realized the Bible wasn't inerrant when he read that the apostle Paul believed  that a rock followed the Israelites around for forty years, giving them things. He said this was a Jewish legend.

Enns was referring to 1st Corinthians 10:4. Go look at it. Paul says the wandering Jews drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them.... and that rock was Christ! Paul wasn't even being subtly poetic. He comes right out and says that Jesus was present and active, helping the Jews, some 1800 years before His own birth.

So the apostle Paul attributed the miracles described in the book of Numbers to the pre-incarnate Christ. Now, you might not believe that Christ existed before He was born of the virgin Mary, but the apostle Paul did. That's orthodox Christianity.  Jesus Christ was (and is) the eternal second Person of the Trinity, which means He was very busy all throughout the Old Testament times.

C.S. Lewis once wrote about academics who boasted they could see fern-seed at ten yards, but in reality couldn't see elephant tracks right in front their noses. This is an example of that. http://andynaselli.com/c-s-lewis-fern-seed-and-elephants

Never assume that just because someone has an advanced degree, or teaches at a university, that he or she thinks clearly. I believe almost anyone could read that verse, and know that Paul did not say that a magical rock followed the Jews around for forty years. But most of us are not trying to project myths, legends, and errors into the Scripture.
